Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
